Writer's Studio booking

Looking for a change of scenery for your students? Book the Writer's Studio and bring your students to our campus space for a peer review day, a writing workshop day or any other classroom plan that our space can facilitate!

Please note: We are not a computer lab. If you require students to use computers, they'll need to bring their own or check out a Chromebook.

Wayne State Writing Center and Writer's Studio

The Writing Center provides a variety of tutoring options free of charge for graduate and undergraduate students at WSU. Tutoring sessions are available in the following modes:

• In-person during our Writer's Studio open hours
• Online, synchronous sessions (up to 50 minutes)
• Online, asynchronous sessions (please review our guidelines for asynchronous/e-tutoring)

Tutoring services are provided by trained undergraduate and graduate student tutors. Our tutors assist with writing from all disciplines and on a range of topics including but not limited to brainstorming, drafting, revising, organization and editing. All tutoring sessions are collaborative, so please come prepared to work with your tutor (whether online or in person). We look forward to working with you!

For in-person services or just a dedicated space to write and study, you're welcome to drop into our Writer's Studio any time during our regular business hours – no appointment necessary!

Building the writing center into your course

Writing Center director, Amy Latawiec, works with the Office for Teaching & Learning (OTL) to provide semi-regular hiflex presentations about best practices for promoting writing center services in your course. This includes but is not limited to:

• Creating scaffolded assignments that encourage students to use tutoring services
• Recommended language to include in Canvas modules as well as in assignment descriptions
• How to help students be proactive about seeking writing tutoring

Please be sure to read OTL emails and review their workshop schedule to make note of the next workshop day!

Canvas Commons module

Do you want the easiest way to encourage and direct your students to the Writing Center? Download our Wayne State Writing Center module in the Canvas Commons.

1. You can find the Canvas Commons on the right-hand side of your Canvas home page. Click on the Commons link and use the search bar by typing in "writing center."
2. The Wayne State Writing Center module will appear on the list of modules.

Downloading the module will place it into your Canvas course. You can then include the module wherever you'd like. We recommend having it up toward the beginning of the course so students see it whenever they log in! 😃
